Meet Shannon Rabotski: Writer, communicator, journalist
I am a 2020 Drake University graduate with a Bachelor’s degree in News Journalism and a passion for telling stories of underrepresented groups and cultures. I am looking to jumpstart my career with a position in digital communication or news reporting.
As a journalist, it is as important to be adaptable as it is skillful. Using my education as a news major with a German minor, I am able to work productively under tight deadlines. I can also take whatever news is thrown at me that day. My flexibility in the newsroom, dedication to the craft, and drive to expand intercultural communication and understanding through reliable and truthful news reporting can be beneficial to any company or newsroom.
I have had experience working for various newsrooms and doing communication for a local Iowa non-profit. I’ve spent a year living in Germany and have gained cultural sensitivity and language skills. I have a passion for learning and sharing, something that is reflected deeply in my work in communications.
Journalism has given me opportunities I never imagined possible, from attending a 2020 democratic debate to learning just about all there is to know about hot air balloons.
As perfectly put by Mark McCormick of the Wichita Eagle, “we’re in this business because we love stories. We tell stories about pain so that people don’t suffer in isolation, and we tell stories about delight so that people can share it. We fill in the naturally occurring gaps between people so that we don’t have to live like complete strangers.”
